This year's theme, "Black Women in American Culture and History," invites us to pay special tribute to the role African American women have played in shaping the character of our Nation -- often in the face of both racial and gender discrimination. As courageous visionaries who led the fight to end slavery and tenacious activists who fought to expand basic civil rights to all Americans, African American women have long served as champions of social and political change. And from the literary giants who gave voice to their communities to the artists whose harmonies and brush strokes captured hardships and aspirations, African American women have forever enriched our cultural heritage. Today, we stand on the shoulders of countless African American women who shattered glass ceilings and advanced our common goals. In recognition of their legacy, let us honor their heroic and historic acts for years to come.

The Star Thrower

An old man had a habit of early morning walks on the beach. One day, as he looked along the shore, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. As he came closer he saw that it was a young woman and she was not dancing but was reaching down to the sand, picking up starfish and very gently throwing them into the ocean.

"Young lady," he asked, "Whyare you throwing starfish into the ocean?"

"The sun is up, and the tideis going out, and if I do not throw them in they will die."

"But young lady, do you notrealise that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all alongit? You cannot possibly make a difference."

The young woman listenedpolitely, paused and then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw itinto the sea, past the breaking waves, saying:

"It made a big difference to that one."

In 1863, during the American Civil War, Pres. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared more than three million slaves living in the Confederate states to be free. More than two years would pass, however, before the news reached African Americans living in Texas. It was not until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, that the state’s residents finally learned that slavery had been abolished. The former slaves immediately began to celebrate with prayer, feasting, song, and dance.

The following year, on June 19, the first official Juneteenth celebrations took place in Texas. The original observances included prayer meetings and the singing of spirituals, and celebrants wore new clothes as a way of representing their new-found freedom. Within a few years, African Americans in other states were celebrating the day as well, making it an annual tradition. Celebrations have continued across the United States into the 21st century and typically include prayer and religious services, speeches, educational events, family gatherings and picnics, and festivals with music, food, and dancing.

March 8^th, 2011 is the 100^th anniversary of International Women’s Day. Few causes promoted by the United Nations have generated more intense and widespread support than the campaign to promote and protect the equal rights of women. The Charter of the United Nations, signed in San Francisco in 1945, was the first international agreement to proclaim gender equality as a fundamental human right. Since then, the U.N. has helped create a historic legacy of internationally agreed strategies, standards, programs and goals to advance the status of women worldwide. EARTH DAY: The Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce along with the cities of Brewton and East Brewton would like to invite you to participate in our Earth Day Clean Up set for Saturday, April 24, 2010. The Jay Road Landfill will be open between 7:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., free of charge, for residents to dispose of electronics (please note that television and computer components will cost $7 per item) and trash only, no household garbage or chemicals. The City of East Brewton will have their trash truck available for East Brewton residents; call 867-7998 for pickup. Here is a list of how to dispose of certain items:

Automobile Batteries: Advance Auto Parts, Auto Zone, and O’Reilly Auto Parts all located on Douglas Avenue.

“This Beautiful World,” a traveling art exhibition on display in the Fine Arts Center, features works by Los Angeles-based photographer Robert Radin. Thirty pieces of his photograph collection will be on display beginning February 11th with a premier showing at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend. The exhibit will remain open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through February 19th. A special thanks to Susan Chapman and Jerry Simmons for securing and displaying the work.

Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The third Monday in January is set aside to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., perhaps the most important figure in the history of Civil Rights in the United States. Strongly influenced by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. King advocated the use of nonviolent means to end racial segregation. He organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957 and led the 1963 March on Washington. He was also instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, effectively outlawing discrimination in public accommodations, facilities, and employment, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964 and died four years later at the hands of an assassin on April 4, 1968.

CINCO DE MAYO is a Mexican holiday which commemorates the defeat of French forces on May 5, 1862, in the Battle of Puebla during which General Ignacio Zaragoza led the vastly outnumbered Mexican army to victory over the forces of Emperor Napoleon III. This triumph became a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism.

CINCO DE MAYO is sometimes confused with Mexican Independence Day (September 16), which commemorates the anniversary of the day in 1810 when revolutionary priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla issued a proclamation declaring Mexico independent from Spain.

Poem in Your Pocket Day! The idea is simple: select a poem you love and carry it with you to share with co-workers, family, and friends. Poems from pockets will be unfolded throughout the day in parks, libraries, schools, workplaces, and bookstores.

Celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day in a baker’s dozen ways:
· Text a poem to friends
· Add a poem to your email footer
· Use a poem for your screen saver or wallpaper
· Send a poem to a friend or loved one by snail mail
· Post a poem on your blog or social networking page
· Browse the links on the library’s Poetry Resources page
· Read a few poems by an author you’ve never heard of before
· Try to compose your own poem when you have some free time
· Look for a poem in the library’s display cases (we still have a few books)
· Make copies of your poem to distribute to friends, colleagues, classmates
· Use a poem on your answering machine, voice mail, or cell phone greeting
· Post pocket-sized verses in public places (be sure to clean up afterwards!)
· Listen to an audio recording of poets reading their own poems (in library)

National Poetry Month

The Favorite Poem Project is dedicated to celebrating, documenting and encouraging poetry’s role in Americans’ lives. Robert Pinsky, the 39th Poet Laureate of the United States, founded the Favorite Poem Project shortly after the Library of Congress appointed him to the post in 1997.During the one-year open call for submissions, 18,000 Americans wrote to the project volunteering to share their favorite poems — Americans from ages 5 to 97, from every state, of diverse occupations, kinds of education and backgrounds. The collection of 50 short video documentaries showcases individual Americans reading and speaking personally about poems they love.

Facts about Black History

The first black history observance was launched in February of 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. Several landmark events in black history occurred in February, for example:

February 23, 1868: W. E. B. DuBois, important civil rights leader and co-founder of the NAACP, was born.
February 3, 1870: The 15th Amendment was passed, granting blacks the right to vote.
February 25, 1870: The first black U.S. senator, Hiram R. Revels (1822-1901), took his oath of office.
February 12, 1909: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded by a group of concerned black and white citizens in New York City.
February 1, 1960: In what would become a civil-rights movement milestone, a group of black Greensboro, N.C., college students began a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter.
February 21, 1965: Malcolm X, the militant leader who promoted Black Nationalism, was shot to death by three Black Muslims.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Since its beginning more than 20 years ago, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been dedicated to increasing awareness of breast cancer issues, especially the importance of early detection. Many strides have been made in breast cancer awareness and treatment, but even more still needs to be accomplished. Women are encouraged to take charge of their own breast health by: practicing regular self-breast exams, making sure to schedule an annual mammogram, adhering to prescribed treatment, and knowing the facts about recurrence.

Hispanic Heritage Month - Sep 15-Oct 15

The choice of September 15 as the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month coincides with the anniversary of independence for five Latin-American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. According to the National Council of La Raza website, the Hispanic population is the largest ethnic minority in the country. As of July 1, 2006, the estimated Hispanic population in the U.S. was 44.3 million, constituting 15% of the nation’s total population. Banned Books Week - Sep 27-Oct 4

Banned Books Week, the only national celebration of the freedom to read, was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than a thousand books have been challenged since 1982 in every state and in hundreds of communities. Perhaps the ultimate question that must be answered in terms of book censorship is "Who decides?" According to Austrian playwright Johann Nestroy: Censorship is the younger of two shameful sisters, the older one bears the name inquisition.
